Day 20 (25 Days of Christmas)

I'm SO excited about this one. I was excited to hear this idea from President Eyring in the Christmas Devotional this year. What a great idea!

Warning, you may want to spend a little more time on this one (there are pictures to color, laminate, and put magnets on the back if you'd like). Or this can be thrown together last minute as well and the children can have coloring pages to keep their attention.

Day 8 picture

I forgot to add the picture for Day 8. Here it is. It's on LDS.org somewhere. When I find it I'll edit Day 8. I forgot it until I came to print everything off for tonight. (We do scriptures at 7pm to start off our bedtime routine. So, if something is missing, I'll add it then.)

Day 1 (25 Days of Christmas)

Here it is. The outline for the 25 days of Christmas. We're going to start out telling about the wise men and the gifts the gave to the baby Jesus. Then we're going to make paper chains with things we are going to do for others that will be our gift to Jesus. (There will be 25 links so they can have their own advent calender and do good deeds. This lesson will have to have several follow-ups throughout the month. Just ask them how they are doing every once in a while.)

Just follow the link for the lesson.
Day 1

25 Days of Christmas

To organize the 25 Days of Christmas I use a binder and several page protectors. In the first page protector for day 1 I put the outline and the next page protector would have the activity or coloring page. For the first day it is an activity. Cut out the links for the paper link chains and put it in this page protector. I recommend cutting out a few more for "mistakes".

Christmas Songs

It's time to start preparing to learn Christmas songs. Being in a home where my mother taught piano lessons Christmas music (at least piano Christmas music to learn) was brought out as soon as Halloween (the Halloween Recital) was over. So, since my piano students have their Halloween music, I'm ready to start thinking about Christmas music. I can't wait to start teaching Emily some Christmas music, especially since she is just starting to sing with us. This idea comes from nursery. The children pick a picture and on the back of the picture is the name of the song that they sing. Same idea, only I'm going to use it with the 25 days of Christmas idea. Here are the pictures and a recording of the song just in case you need a refresher course yourself. When printing out the pictures make sure they are the right size. I like to make my pictures about 1/4 of a page. Some can be a little bigger and some smaller. Plus, don't color it. Just put it on colored paper (best yet construction paper) and then put contact paper to protect it. It will be a wonderful family activity. Plus, you'll be ready to go caroling! Don't think you're family can go caroling (especially if you are like us and you don't want it to end up a duet) we'll go with you. :)

Free Shipping

I don't know if everyone knew this except for me (Nathan didn't know, so I'm not the only one in the dark) ldscatalog.com ships free. That is fabulous because the distribution center is like a 30 minute drive from my house. Which wouldn't be a big deal if I drove down that way every once in a while, but I don't. With gas the price that it is, it would be worth shipping it instead. So, I was planning on paying the shipping for the new Nursery Manual (which, by-the-way, makes for some fabulous fhe lessons). I was pleasantly surprised to find the shipping to be FREE. Yay!

Done!

All right. I'm done. This is officially the end of the long list of Article of Faith FHE lessons. I did this for the people who still wanted a copy of it from my old ward. I miss you guys! Also, you'll notice that I have you download the outline to your computer. It is in Microsoft Word. I did this so you can change it to fit your family's needs and if you have any ideas to change it and make it better, please do. Just let me know all of your great ideas. I'd love to hear them and add them to mine. Thanks.

First Article of Faith

The pictures below may look a little yellow. This is because I took these pictures from the friend magazine itself. Any flannel-board figures before the year 2000 are not very good. These may be a little yellow, but after you color them with marker nobody will ever know.

1st Article of Faith Pictures

Thirteen Articles of Faith

I put together Family Home Evening Lessons for the Thirteen articles of faith for my ward for a challenge from the stake to have family home evening lessons on each article of faith. In my own FHE library I have a 3 ringed binder dedicated to these, but the pictures I have in the 3 ringed binders that are dedicated to just the flannel board pictures. That way I can use the pictures for many different subjects and not worry which binder those pictures are in. The pictures are in my picture binders. The lessons, in different binders (i.e. Articles of Faith binder). I will post the Thirteen Articles of Faith FHE lessons here.

FHE for Aug 4, 2008

So I finally figured out what I'm going to do. This should be the longest post because I have to explain everything. So, here we go.

First off - looking for something to do with your little one? I have two fabulous places to go that I have recently seen.

The Friend's website page has all the fun stuff right there. Just bookmark it and then it is a quick trip for printing out the coloring page and activities that you don't want to rip out of your Friend.
Friend website
The second one I just have on my Google reader (rss feed). (I really like having everything in one nice spot.) But, I can give you the normal address (just sign up for the feed there, but Google had a list of feeds that I might like and this is one of the ones I signed up for. Thank you, Google.)
Suite 101 Kids Crafts
I'm always the last to figure out things though, so maybe you already know.

On to the lesson though.
This week we did: (drum roll please) "Joseph Smith Receives the Gold Plates"
You can find it on lds.org (then go to "Gospel Library" near top, choose "Magazines", then "Friend", then "search friend" and if you put in the search "color figures" you will find all sorts of great Family Home Evening lessons with pictures. Choose 1 and you are half way done! Just copy, color, cut, (I definitely suggest laminating, or even just use contact paper) and presto! My personal preference at this point is to put magnets on the back (find magnet tape at a craft store) and I use a white board that is magnetic. This is the modern version of your Mom's felt board.

So after doing all of this, I looked at the reading part. It is huge. So, I adapted it. I took the picture from the Gospel Art Picture Kit (#406 I think is the one of Joseph receiving the plates) and used the short version of the story found there. (There are two, just in case you have never seen these. The long version on top, the short version on the bottom. For a 2 1/2 year old and a 1 year old this is all we can handle). The way we do it: I hold the picture and read the story, while Daddy helps the girls put the pictures on the board (Daddy loves his job :).)

Then we played a game. We took the Golden Plates that come from the lesson and played the "Hot and Cold" game. I hid the Golden Plates while Daddy took Emily and Meredith out in the other room to count to 10 (just another great opportunity to teach your child how to count). Then I would tell them when they were getting warmer until they finally got hot, or they would pass right by the spot and I would tell them they were getting colder.
Meredith wasn't too interested in this game (the one year old), but I finally thought of a way to adapt it. Sit down together and put the Golden Plates on the ground and then put a blanket over it. Ask her "where is it?" and have her pull the blanket off. If you have any more ideas for this lesson, post a comment.

We also had a family outing before our lesson. We went and got Arby's and then to Walmart to get a new microwave (since the old one is dead) and then we went to the pet store next door to see all of the animals. The girls loved that part, I especially enjoy having a new microwave (microwave - the essential part of any family with small children - lol), and we all enjoyed some food. Needless to say, I enjoyed not doing the dishes.

So here is the stuff you need for the lesson. First off, the link.
Joseph Smith Receives the Gold Plates
If you go here you can find everything (pictures and lesson)

- or -

I've enlarged it. (see pictures below)

Just FYI:
This Family Home Evening lesson is church approved. Meaning - you can use it for primary or whatever other reason you can find.
You can do your own search for pictures (as stated above), or just come back here for all of my stuff. I have taken everything I could find from the LDS website and enlarged it. (Searching for lessons with pictures and enlarging everything took forever, so just use my stuff. If you find one that I haven't posted yet, I have probably already enlarged it. Just post a comment and I'll email it to you. )

Color, cut, laminate, and then put magnets on the back for your FHE lesson.

Update

Currently I am working on finding an easy (and nice) way of putting the stuff I have on the blog. I am thinking that I will have to do it in slides.
